how-it-works

The buffer, the hotkey and the two audio tracks.

ClipVault

ClipVault runs in the tray and keeps a rolling buffer of your screen and audio. When you press your hotkey, the last 2 minutes are saved as an MP4 in your clips folder, and Windows shows a “Clip Saved” notification.

Saving a clip

  1. Play. The buffer keeps the last 2 minutes. You can change the length in Settings.
  2. Press your HOTKEY. It works while a fullscreen game has focus.
  3. Find it in the library. The clip is at the top, tagged with the game.
From the round win to the export, 12 seconds

Game audio and your microphone are recorded on separate tracks, so you can turn your mic off or down later without touching the game sound.

library

Where saved clips land.

ClipVault

New clips show up at the top of the library as soon as they're saved. Supported games are detected and tagged, and the file name includes the date, time and game.

ClipVault library grid with the new VALORANT clip at the top, followed by TEKKEN 8, League of Legends and older VALORANT clips, each with a game tag.
The library, with the new clip at the top

In the library

  • Hover a card to play the clip in the grid.
  • Search, and sort by date, size, name or favorite.
  • Filter by game, tag or favorites. Grid or list view.
  • Select several clips to tag, favorite, export or delete them together.

capture

What it records, how it encodes, where the files go.

ClipVault

By default ClipVault records your monitor with DXGI. It doesn't hook into games or inject anything, which keeps it anti-cheat friendly.

Settings, Video and Capture: Record set to Monitor, Monitor 1 (Primary) selected, capture method DXGI (Recommended), capture mouse cursor on, resolution 720p or 1080p, frame rate 30, 60, 120 or 144, and the quality presets Compact to Maximum.
Settings › Video & Capture

Recording

Your monitor by default. Game-only and monitor-plus-games modes are experimental. You can also pick an app window.

faq

Before you install.

PinnedCommon questions

Is it free?

Yes. It's free and open source under GPL-2.0-or-later, and the code is on GitHub.

What do I need?

Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit. An NVIDIA GPU is used for NVENC encoding when you have one; otherwise it encodes with x264 on the CPU.

Which key saves a clip?

Any key you choose during setup or in Settings. It's F9 by default, changeable in Settings. It works while a fullscreen game has focus.

How long are clips?

As long as the buffer, 2 minutes by default. You can make the buffer longer or shorter, and trim any clip afterwards.

Will it cause anti-cheat problems?

It doesn't hook into games or inject anything. By default it records your monitor, the same way screen recording does.

Does it upload my clips?

No. There's no account, and clips are MP4 files in a folder you choose.

Does it start with Windows?

If you want it to. It runs from the tray, and the first run walks you through the clips folder, capture, audio and hotkey.

What's it built on?

libobs, the recording engine from OBS Studio, with an Electron and React app on top.
